July 2014 Newsletter

Summer is sizzling! This summer has been full of fun and excitement for WIN Family Services and we are thrilled to share our news with you! From stepping it up in the social media world to partnering with new organizations, WIN has been busy and thriving all season long. Read on for more about what we've been up to!

L2 Family Foundation croppedAl Laws Appointed Board Member of L2 Family Foundation

WIN Family Services is proud to announce a budding partnership with L2 Family Foundation!  Co-founded by Keon Lattimore and his brother Ray Lewis, the organization’s mission is “to create a nurturing, stable, and culturally diverse family environment that encourages underprivileged youths and to become educated and effective contributing adults” as they work to provide single homes for single parent families. With goals that closely aligned to WIN’s own mission, Lattimore brought on the wisdom and guidance of CEO Alford Laws, Jr. and the Family Strengthening Practice model.

Members of WIN staff as well as Mr. Laws himself were present during L2 Family Foundation’s program launch – a memorable and lavish event hosted by our very own WIN Team member, Tracey Drummond! The evening featured keynote speakers from the organization such as Keon Lattimore – Founder, Sunseria Smith – President and mother of Lattimore and Lewis, Mike Gabor – Partner, and Ray Lewis – Co-Founder and former Baltimore Ravens player. The evening was full of excitement and gratitude as Mr. Lattimore shared his vision with guests and supporters. “This is our coming out party,” he exclaimed as he shared his vision of community revitalization and offering homes to families in need. “We are using Baltimore as our model,” said Mike Gabor, “We want to make a change in the city.” Success of an individual registered in the L2 program not only lies within his or her ability to financially plan, but also in his or her ability to interact with their family and community. “We don’t live in glass houses,” explains Sunseria Smith, “That’s where Family Strengthening comes in.” Expanding the reach of Family Strengthening principles and communication skills sets, Mr. Laws was appointed board member alongside other distinguished individuals working to make a change in the community. Please join us in congratulating Lattimore and Lewis for launching such an outstanding foundation!

May's Mass Meeting Mass meeting 1

This past May, WIN Family Services held one of its biggest events – the annual Mass Meeting! Mass Meeting is an opportunity for WIN staff to spend quality time with and get to know WIN foster parents from both Baltimore and Prince George’s County. With over 100 people in attendance, the meeting event themed “The Us Movement: Connect. Reflect. Protect” was an enjoyable and informative day for all. Under the same roof, Prince George’s County TFC and Baltimore TFC gathered for a day of fun and fellowship – complete with fun games, exceptional food, and eye-opening learning.

During the meeting, foster parents were honored for the time they have dedicated to changing the lives of numerous children in their communities, whether it was 1 year, 5, years or even 15 years of service! The meeting also featured one of the biggest and most memorable surprises for WIN CEO, Alford Laws, Jr. Three of Mr. Laws’ former foster youth came to the meeting and shared their unique stories of struggling through life until they met “Mr. Al” who changed their world around. The group presented Mr. Laws with a plaque commemorating the work that he has done and the lives he has changed over the last 20 years. A truly heartwarming and memorable event, May’s Mass Meeting was a perfect opportunity to come together as an organization and move forward together in WIN’s mission to holistically support individuals in need.

TFCPRP SocialTFC and PRP Social

WIN Family Services, Inc. is both a therapeutic foster care agency and psychiatric rehabilitation program. As two different sectors of the company, WIN recognizes the importance of working together to achieve maximum results in supporting the youth and families it serves. This past May, WIN TFC and PRP came together for their first ever Team Building event. Gathering at our Baltimore PRP location, all staff from both the TFC and PRP sides, from both Baltimore AND Prince George’s County, took part in outdoor games, team building activities, and a delicious dinner provided by members of the staff. By the end of the evening, both sides of WIN got to know each other, developed new relationships, and came out stronger as a team. We are looking forward to more team building events in the future!

WIN Supports The Lardarius Webb Foundation Lardarius Webb photo

WIN Family Services is a proud supporter of the Ladarius Webb Foundation. The foundation hosted its most popular event at the beginning of June – The Ladarius Webb Charity Softball Game. This exciting event features Baltimore Ravens defense and offense going head to head at a softball game, raising funds for underprivileged youth. WIN Family Services became a ticket sponsor for the event, enabling 50 WIN youth and staff to be present and cheer on their favorite football players! June 1st gave way to perfect weather for a ballgame.  A truly exciting event, spectators were able to see players such as Joe Flacco, Jacoby Jones, and Lardarius Webb himself try their hand at softball and even take part in friendly home run competitions. WIN Family Services is glad to have been a part of such a memorable event for the youth and offer support to other members of the community in need.

WIN Staff Honored by Birth Family

WIN Family Services is pleased to share a special message from one of our youth’s biological families who have recently reunified. We are proud of our staff and know they will continue to do great things! Below is an excerpt from a heartfelt message sent to our Director…

Not the Typical Response to “What Do You want to Be when You Grow Up?”

A member of WIN Staff received a pleasant and heartwarming surprise at her daughter’s kindergarten graduation. Five year-olds around the world have big dreams of what they want to be when they grow up. Imagine this mother’s surprise as she opened up her daughter’s work from the past year and saw this image:

madeline letter

The assignment was titled, “What Do You want to be when You Grow Up”. Above a colorful illustration, scrawled in the child’s best handwriting was the simple statement, “When I grow up I want to be a foster care parent.” The image was shared with WIN staff immediately and the simple statement was enough to bring a tear to the eye for some. We will absolutely love to have her as one of our parents some day!
