January 2016

Happy New Year family!

2017 is here and we are beginning a whole new journey with you. Our holiday season has come to an end, but that doesn't mean we don't have anything to celebrate. Here's to new beginnings and new adventures. Make this year count with WIN Family Services right by your side.
A Holiday to Remember

The holidays were truly bright for WIN Family Services as we held our annual Christmas celebration for our youth and families. As the agency’s biggest event each year, our main goal this time around was to create a memorable experience that ALL of our clients (therapeutic foster care and psychiatric rehabilitation) and families this year from Baltimore and Prince George’s County could enjoy and share. This year, the party took place at the ever-elegant Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Maryland. With over 500 guests, clients and their families enjoyed a specially catered meal, various carnival games, a magic show and… PRESENTS!Thanks to the generosity of the surrounding community, each guest was able to walk out with an individually wrapped Christmas present.“This was our best event yet,”says WIN Director of Operations, Ayo Brown,“our company has grown so have our opportunities.”We can’t wait to see what the next year will bring!

Blessings in Abundance

Blessings come in abundance.Thank you toElderslie St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Pastor Terry L. McCain,  and Ms. Laura Bowiefor the donation of3 large boxes of school supplies. Our youth will be so excited to see thenotebooks, papers, markers, crayons, books, a few bookbags, and other school supplies. We are so appreciative of the support we have received and the tremendous effect these gifts will have on the future of our kids.

The blessings didn't stop there. Throughout the holiday season, even more members of the community approached us and wanted to help us in making the season a little brighter for all the youth and families that we served. A huge thank you goes toHOF City Sports for their contribution of dozens of stuffed animalsto be given to our foster youth,66Raw Radio for their contribution of coats and toysfor our community mental health clients, andStacey Grossfeld for her donation of jewelry setsthat were given to our clients as Christmas presents. THANK YOU!!!

Sharing the Blessing

WIN Family Services has been blessed with so much throughout the years. This holiday season, we were blessed with an abundance of donations thanks to the support of the surrounding community and our partners. We were immensely successful in providing over 500 clients with Christmas presents. However, the scope of our service goes far beyond the walls of WIN Family Service. When members of the surrounding community reached out for help with their holiday needs, there was no question what we needed to do – we gave all we got!We are so thankful to the holiday blessings that we received so we were able to share with others:

“Merry Christmas Laura (and WIN Family Services) All my babies would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! They are very, very thankful for the gifts…Thank you so much for you guys kindness and support. God Bless You!” -S. Harris

“No amount of paper, or words can explain how thankful and humble  I am for your kindness and thoughtfulness. You are a true blessing. My family and I Thank you for your kindness.” –N. Beljour

WIN-ning with Good News all Year Long!

The temperature's HOT but WIN's not hiding ourselves indoors! We've had such a busy summer from happy hours to basball games to community recognition events.

Read on for all that we've been up to!

A Night at The Yard

Nothing says “It’s summer!” like America’s favorite past time. The Baltimore Orioles treated 50 WIN clients to a night at The Yard. Kids ages 1 to 99 enjoyed hotdogs, great weather, and good company all while seeing their favorite sports team play. A special thank you goes to Nick Jones who facilitated this entire event. You have truly made this a memorable evening for the youth and adults we serve.

A Beacon of Hope
The spotlight was on WIN Family Services as Havre de Grace Housing Authority hailed our agency as a Beacon of Hope. The Havre De Grace Housing Authority puts in place various programs that assist individuals and families assess their needs, identify barriers and create success plans in order to achieve economic  independence.  We have worked with them in the past to provide our clients with the resources they need to live healthily and independently.

Out of 900 agencies, WIN Family Services was selected as one of the 12 agencies that will work with Project Success in presenting their newest initiative: Families of Hope. The Families of Hope are nominated by their agencies for demonstrating tremendous achievement, effort, or attitude in accomplishing their goals.

WIN Family Services has worked with Havre de Grace Housing Authority on many occasions including The Poverty Walk and Summer Jam. Nicki Briggs, executive director of Success Project, stated "WIN was on the short list... a top choice." Families of Hope will culminate at the Beacon of Hope Gala, where one of the 12 families nominated by the sponsor agencies will be named Harford County's 2017 Beacon of Hope!

An All-Star, on and off the Court

Attention family! We have a Hall of Famer in our midst! Our very own, Nathanial Fields, Family Strengthening Trainer, was inducted into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding efforts during the 2002-2003 season. He was honored for his athletic performance, achievements and awards for his college career. This honor comes as no surprise to us since we are no strangers to Mr. Fields’ dedication, commitment, and loyalty to his work with our youth and families. Congratulations Nate!

Nickels Oysters
A Night at the Taphouse

It was a summer night to remember, full of fun, delicious food, and refreshing beverages. WIN held its first restaurant night fundraiser on July 20th, 2016 at The Nickel Taphouse in Mt. Washington. With the generosity of  Nickel’s owner and manager – Robbin and Mike – and agreeing to host this event,  the night was a huge success, raising over $400 for disadvantaged youth. Staff and restaurant go-ers were on hand to enjoy a happy hour of fresh oysters, craft beers, and even ice cream! Robbin and Mike, you have made regulars out of WIN Family Services staff, can’t wait to see you guys for dinner!

A Day to be Celebrated!

MothersDayLunch

Being a mother is such a special role in this life and we were so happy that we got to celebrate the mothers in our community with our first ever Women’s Group Mother Day Luncheon. This special event took place Wednesday May 11th – as the amazing ladies we work with enjoyed delicious food, poetry readings, lessons in the 5 Love Languages, music provided by staff and special gifts! We are so excited that we had the opportunity to celebrate with some of the most wonderful mothers and mother-figures that we know. We’re looking forward to hosting a brunch in Cecil County in June!

Home on the Rangehorseback riding 2016

WIN Team is always looking for enriching opportunities to expand the worldview of the youth and adults we work with. On May 19th, a few of our young clients from Cecil County got the chance to ride one of the world’s most beautiful creatures – horses! This unique opportunity at Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program at Rolling Hills Ranch offered an exciting experience for 8 budding animal lovers. Horse back riding has proven to be an asset in the healing of individuals who have experienced trauma in their lives, whether it is the close connection with the horse or the freedom in riding such a magnificent animal. We can’t wait for the next time our clients can go for their next ride!

congratulations

Oh, The Places You Will Go...

Every time one of our youth reaches a milestone, we can’t help but shout for joy! A tremendous congratulations goes to everyone who is graduating from middle school, high school, and college this Spring! In Prince George’s County, we have 7 youth graduating from high school and 1 graduating from middle school. In Baltimore, we have 2 youth graduating from high school and 2 from middle school. We are incredibly proud of you and the work you have put toward your future. Graduating is no easy feat and we are beyond excited to be able to witness such a momentous occasion. The world is yours for the taking and your WIN family will be here with you every step of the way.
