Staff Shoutout

WIN Family Health prides itself in offering great customer service to our clients and our service partners. Our priority is to meet the needs of all those we work with and establish thriving relationships with agencies that share our mission. When we get great news from a partner, we can’t help but shout it out from the mountains. Thank you to Beacon Health by helping us in our goal to create a healthier community! Below is a quick message from one of our partners:

"I called Beacon Health today and spoke with Darlene, customer service representative.  Darlene reported that she checks in with providers and consumers from time to time about the services they receive.  WIN is constantly getting great reviews and service success stories.  She also stated its not often she gets great reports from providers and consumers but to consistently here great things about WIN is impressive.  In addition she gives WIN referral’s often and today she gave 3!  This is to acknowledge that WIN staff are doing a great job and CSW are doing great work in the community.  Way to go team you all are the best!" - T. Wheeler (Counseling Support Monitor)

Our WIN Family Health team members are committed to those we serve and helping  them through some of the toughest times in their lives. We are blessed to have individuals like Malika Brown as a part of our family, who is there to support at exactly the right time. She works to connect with the clients and ensure that they know they are cared for and supported. Here are just a few of the amazing things Malika has undergone through her time with WIN:

“We had platinum service at the PRP Baltimore office today. It’s always a very intense day when we have platinum service. It is especially intense for those who are there to help clients get through the intake process. We left work today overstimulated and a little bit tired from trying to get to get our workloads under control in time for servant leader tomorrow.

When Malika left she saw two gentlemen passed out on the bus stop near Giant. Like she does, she sprung into action. She called in the troops. Anita, Tina and Sarah were there in a flash and I circled back around to join them. When I got there Malika had already administered Narcam and one of the gentleman slowly became alert. The other was trying to come back around and the paramedics continued to work on him. Even though the scene was scary and some people were in tears, I was so proud to see our team in purple uniform handling business and serving the community.

Malika saved their lives! She did not hesitate to use her training, her knowledge and her team. She is such a blessing in a crisis!  I thank God for her and I am so blessed to watch her help people every single day!!! Today I watched her save lives!”

“ During our Platinum Services at Connexions, Malika was seen walking down the hall with a highschool student who was very upset and confessed doing hard to herself. Malika successfully de-escalated the issue and talked to her about how she and our entire team could support her.”

We are so proud to have you as a part of our team, Malika!

Meet our Social Workers

The month of March is recognized as National Social Work Month and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to celebrate the amazing individuals who give their hearts in their work each day. Meet our social workers – the heart and soul of WIN Family Health!

Leslie: The ability to interact with others and build relationships! Being a part of the process to support individuals growth, independence and change.

Lauren Capel: The best part of being a social worker is being able to advocate, support and be a light at the end of the tunnel for those who have lost hope and their own voice.  I enjoy creating transformative experiences to empower and being a vessel for healing for those in pain.

Shayla Cheeks: My favorite part about being a social worker is running into people that I served many years later and hearing their success stories.

Nicole: One of the many reasons I love being a social worker is because I love to help people. As cliche as that answer is, I love to be a constant in the life of someone who has always lived inconsistently. I love being able to be there and support a child or a parent when they feel stressed or overwhelmed. I love being able to plant seeds in the lives of children and hope that one day they bloom to become beautiful flowers. I love empowering children to become their own person and I absolutely LOVE that moment when a child learns that they can do anything they want with just a little hard work and help. I love playing a small part of change in the bigger picture of someone’s life.

Davida: I love being a Social Worker because I have been given enormous opportunities to serve disenfranchised populations through a therapeutic model premised on dignity. Serving children and families and providing innovative mental health services has propelled me to work towards being a part of alleviating the disparities present for marginalized groups. In a nut shell Social Work is a rewarding and diverse field.

We are so grateful for all of your hard work and commitment to our community!

March 2019

We hope you've been surviving the crazy weather we've been having. But all the snow and ice can't keep WIN Family Health from all of our fun activities  this winter season! We've been very busy with community events, success stories, and changes to our agency. Read on for all that we've been up to. Visit our website at www.winfamilyservices.org

See Us in the Community!

WIN’s popping up all over the community – county to county, event after event. We got to share our mission throughout the state and even met some incredible people on the way. The next time you go to a resource fair or community event, be sure to keep an eye out for those friendly faces wearing purple polos and come say hi!

Check out our Family Support Monitor, Kawina Thornton, and our Director of Family Support, Jasmin Cooke, stopped by the Bilingual Latino Job Fair at the Center for Educational Partnership. “We met really great people wanting to make a difference!” says Jasmin, who collected over 13 resumes. Our amazing team were able to connect with compassionate individuals who were interested in becoming Counseling Support Workers and foster parents. We were also able to connect with agencies who want to collaborate. Sounds like you’ll be seeing a lot more of WIN at other resource fairs!

A huge thank you also goes to  to Gregg and Malika for helping make our presence known at Set the Captives Free service today! We met with dozens of individuals who share our heart and are excited to join WIN as DSW’s and foster parents. We’re blessed with the gift of community and can’t wait to make thriving and lasting relationships with everyone we’ve met.

Lastly, we've partnered with Medmark to network with local counselors and therapists to offer our additional services. Every month you can find us at the Timonium location, stop by to say hi and grab a treat!

Enriching Lives Through Experience

WIN Team PRP works to produce enriching experiences that enhance our clients’ worldview. Part of those experiences come in the form of activities planned and scheduled for youth and adults, ranging from guest speakers, fitness classes, and finance workshops.  In the past few months, WIN Team put together events that were not only fun, but truly enriching!

Our Prince George's County Office Hosted a Personal Hygiene and How to Tie a Tie workshop for our young gentlemen enrolled in the program. Refreshments were on hand as our males took some time to learn how to tie their own ties and dress for success. They learned just how important it is to be presentable when it comes to making great first impressions.

A Special Thank You

Who knew a trip to after school detention would turn out to be one of the greatest blessings and acts of kindness the WIN family has ever witnessed? This past holiday season we were surprised with a very generous donation from the community of Connexions Academy The biggest surprise came when we found out how the donation came about.

It all started when two students landed themselves in afternoon detention. After a long talk with their teacher, Jodi Faye, they decided that they needed to do something different. Together, with the help of staff, the students put together a fund to help benefit foster youth for the holidays. After weeks of planning and collecting, the students and their community were able to purchase Christmas gifts for over 100 of our foster youth! Thank you so much to Ms. Faye, these two wonderful students, and the entire Connexions Academy community  for your acts of kindness! You are truly changing the world!

Connection with Connexion
ConneXions is a community-based, arts-focused, charter school located in the greater Mondawmin community whose focus  is on the arts with a commitment to academic excellence, preparing students for both college and career paths.

We are excited to announce our recent partnership with ConneXions to promote the performing arts, community cultural and civic leadership, and activism. In addition to the unique and rigorous program that helps students gain expertise in fine arts, they also participate in many multicultural school and community events. We’re excited to be a part of these students’ bright future.

Family First
WIN works to create a strong family dynamic  with those we serve throughout Maryland. So when we hear families of those who DO the work commend our organization, we really take it to heart. Hear what the mother of one of our wonderful team members had to say:

“Thank you!   I would love to meet you all and give you all hugs of thanks for the awesome coworkers that you are, for supporting and encouraging Jenn not only at work but personally, emotionally and spiritually.  She talks so highly about you all.”

Thank you to Dori for her kind words and a huge thank you to our dearest Jenn for all of your hard work and compassion toward the individuals we serve!

August 2017

Happy August family! We've had such an eventful summer and can't wait to share all that we've been up to! From making our mark in the community, to successful adoptions, to clients reaching milestones - we have much to be excited about and we're ready to give you quick updates! Take some time to read below!

Finally a Forever Home

We’re excited to announce the adoption of one of our foster youth!

FB entered therapeutic foster care at the of 4 from a family history of drug and physical abuse in the home. Largely nonverbal and  diagnosed on the autism spectrum, FB was matched with a family who could give him the support and attention he needed. Through WIN’s network of therapists, psychiatrists, and doctors, FB was also given top priority to Maryland’s leading health professionals.  He has stayed with this family throughout his time with WIN and is now speaking and spending most of his time in a general education classroom. He enjoys playing basketball on a team and visiting with his birth family on a weekly basis. FB proudly states that he has “two mommies”.

FB's birth family is still heavily involved and highly supportive of his adoption placement. They encourage his transition, knowing that his adoptive family could give him the care he needs. Likewise, FB’s adoptive family invites his birth family to birthday parties and holidays, so they are able to celebrate these momentous occasions together.

FB’s own transition is a testament to the therapy and care that WIN is able to provide – from refusing to speak to smiling and hugging those who come to see him. A milestone was reached on the first day of school, FB was quick to stop his adoptive mother, insisting he enter into the school by himself… FB never did well with a change in routine before. He is currently learning to care for his new puppy, who he has become quite attached to. He still struggles with a daily routine due to his diagnosis, but he is making strides now that he has found his forever home.

Enriching Lives through Experiences

WIN Team PRP works to produce enriching experiences that enhance our clients’ worldview. Part of those experiences come in the form of activities planned and scheduled for youth and adults, ranging from cultural awareness, to financial advice, to trip to the zoo. In the past few month, WIN Team put together events that were not only fun, but truly enriching!

Baltimore’s  Team held a Multicultural Awareness event in which attendees learned about Japan, Africa, and St. Thomas. Youth and adults learned various facts about each culture and their traditions, while sampling popular snacks from each region. We’re looking forward to hosting our Multicultural Communication event this month!

The Prince George’s County team took their youth group to the  National Zoo. Three of our clients had never been before and it was clear that choosing the zoo as July’s onsite event was the right decision! The day was filled with nothing but smiles and wonder while kids were able to meet animals from different parts of the world.

Cecil County hosted Art Therapy sessions to encourage clients to engage their creative side. From designing  crafts to coloring in books, youth and adults were treated to a relaxing atmosphere while they let their imaginations take over. Clients learned just how powerful it is to be able to channel creative energy as part of the healing process.

We’re looking forward to all the upcoming events!

WIN Helps Promote Safety in Neighborhoods during National Night Out

National Night Out was developed as a way for people to say “NO!” to crime in their neighborhoods. From rallies, to block parties, to parades, various groups put together evening programs to celebrate this night. The message? To just how strong the community connection really is.

WIN Family Services was proud to participate in Baltimore and Prince George’s County for the third year in a row. The weather held out while hundreds of community members gathered in solidarity. WIN was proud to offer support and services to anyone who may have otherwise not known where to look.

Additionally, WIN staff donated their time to offer services during Baltimore's Ceasefire "Nobody Kill Anybody for 72 Hours". Our community mental health and substance abuse professionals were on hand to be accessible to community members who may not have felt they had access or were to embarrassed to reach out. Our staff, along with multiple organizations,  spent Friday night in East Baltimore and then again Saturday night in West Baltimore making sure these neighborhoods had resources they needed.

We’re excited to be a part of next year’s event and continuing to advocate for safety and compassion in our neighborhoods.

Three Cheers for another WIN!

Meet Ms. Carmelita Tchouake, who, despite facing extreme financial and personal challenges as she watched her life rapidly sinking in a downward spiral, persevered through each of these setbacks and now gratefully and graciously shares how her Faith, Focus, and Family at WIN helped her to keep pressing forward and make it through to VICTORY !!
"I really appreciate you for considering my problem with my security deposit for an apartment rental.  Moving to my new apartment was the best experience in my life and I am overjoyed with emotions.  I felt like I made it and God kept his promise.

I am going through a divorce and dealing with an alcohol problem.  If it wasn’t for your supportive team always encouraging me and motivating me to be better; I don’t think I could make it. I could not get assistance for a major part of my security deposit.

I had giving up and I did not want to live.  I felt like I was trying so hard, but nothing was happening.  However, my DSW, Ms. Sherri Adair and my Addictions Counselor, Mr. Jay Henderson did not give up on me.  They would pick me up from my house and sometimes wait for an hour for me to come out so I can make it to my appointments.

One day, I went to my onsite visit with my DSW, Ms. Sherri Adair and seen Mr. David Heard.  I asked him for help with my security deposit.  He told me that I have to try harder to make all appointments with my DSW and Addictions Counselor and to stay focus.  I agreed and began to work very hard to make all my appointments on time.

Then, my life started to make a change. I got my own car and I started to really believe in myself.  Once I found out you had approved my security deposit financial support; made me so happy.

I have now moved into my new apartment.  It feels like a brand new start in my life. When we entered the apartment, my children were running around and now they are happy too.
Furthermore, I did not have enough money to purchase household items; but, I did not care.  My DSW, Ms. Sherri Adair was so excited for me that she went to Walmart to purchase items that I needed.  When I went to my Addictions Counselor, Mr. Jay Henderson would make sure that the whole group ate even when I knew he didn’t have the money. But, I am glad he did, because, I did not have food in the house.

Mr. Al Laws, my mother, Ms. Earlene Cox worked for your company and she would say so many wonderful things about you.  Now, I see the great man she was talking about that is a true man of God.  I really appreciate you and your team at WIN Family Services.

As I am writing this letter, tears are running down my face.  I am truly blessed that I am getting services at WIN.  I will be successful one day and I will never forget that you created a business that saved my life twice from suicide.  I have my own place, my own car, in the right state of mind and health with the help of an awesome team at WIN Family Services.  I am very happy and thank you so much for continuing to support me."

Catch WIN at an Event Near You!

WIN Family Services is making its mark in the community and we want to meet YOU! Our team has been spotted at events just like the 3rd Annual Community Resources Fair hosted by the Department of Juvenile Services. Prince George’s County staff, Alicia Merritt and Louis Martin, spent the day greeting individuals, sharing information and making connections.   It is our goal to make our services known and accessible to community members.  We'll be at your local resource fairs, backpack giveaways and family events throughout the rest of the season, so when you see our purple table cloth and bright colored banners, stop by and say hi! We’ll have all kinds of fun things for you!

Coming around the corner...

WIN Family Services and Nickel Taphouse in Mt. Washington are teaming up once again this summer for a special fundraising event: Meet the Brewer: Brewer’s Art on August 17th. Bring your friends and get a chance to meet one of Baltimore’s favorite beer makers, have delicious food, and raise funds for at-risk youth! We can’t wait to see you there!

Happy Holidays! This is such an exciting time for WIN Family Health as we gear up for our biggest event of the year - our annual Holiday Extravaganza for the youth and families we serve. We've been busy like elves this season - from community events, to movie premieres, to big fundraisers.

First we stopped at Cecil County’s Annual Recovery Walk where we shared information about our substance use disorder services. We also stopped at The Family Tree’s FamFest 5k and Walk where we took part in funfilled activities for the whole family! Next, we took part in Goodwill’s Thanksgiving Resource Fair where we were able to share our services with the Baltimore community. To round out a busy season, we held our annual gift drive for the youth at Big Lots in Reisterstown Plaza. We were also joined by Heaven600 radio superstar- Lee Michaels! Kind and generous faces greeted us throughout the entire day. What a great way to end the year!

Cecil and Harford County clients had the amazing opportunity to experience therapeutic horseback riding, thanks to our partner, Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program. The youth connected with the spirited animals and it was a great time had by all!

Cecil County also hosted a pumpkin decorating party. During the activity, the youth had fun and talked about how having the chance to express themselves through art made them fee. They were happy, relaxed and having a great time! It was all hands on deck as Cheryl provided cupcakes, cookies and drinks. Devin, Theresa, Tiffany and Placida helped to oversee the activity. Cheryl, Marina, and Ayo donated all the pumpkins that were used. Thank you everyone for your support!

A Special Thank You

We were extremely blessed this season to have received an abundance of donations. John Smith and his team shipped over 300 items from Under Armour right to our office. From jackets, to sweaters, to sweatpants, to gym bags- the generous donation will keep our clients warm this holiday season.

The great folks at Good Sports have also granted WIN the opportunity to choose any athletic clothing and equipment that fits our current needs. Our sports group in DREAM will be happy to know that Good Sports and Nike will be a huge part in helping our athletes practice and hone their skills.

Ashley Johnson and the Feld Entertainment family, granted magical wishes for the youth and families we serve. Sending over 100 of our clients passes to the Disney on Ice, Mickey’s Search Party, dreams really did come true as our youth were able to see their favorite Disney characters light up the stage.

A Special Movie Premiere
November was truly a time for family as the movie, “Instant Family” premiered right before the Thanksgiving holiday. The heartwarming comedy features Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as a married couple who decides to adopt a teenager and her two younger siblings from foster care. The film depicts their adventure as a new family, showing the various nuances of foster care and adoption – the joys and the struggles.

We were on hand during premiere weekend at the Bel Air Regal Cinemas to shed light on the therapeutic foster care experience. We hope the movie will inspire families to take the leap and be a part of a brighter future for a child in need. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a foster parent, please contact Kristina Jones at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Making a Difference
We are so proud of our former youth and a forever WIN Family member, Jamar Barnes, for the strides he has taken to improve the community we live in. In a recent video posted by Maryland Legal Aid, Jamar’s story is highlighted - from dealing with his past to taking the necessary steps to move forward. We are so proud of you Jamar, you are truly an inspiration! See the video here!

June 2017

Break out the sunscreen and fire up the grills, it’s the summer time! It’s the beginning of summer and WIN Family Services is excited to share with you all what we’ve been up to and what we’re going to be doing this season. From retreats, to graduations, to fundraisers, we have much to celebrate!

WIN Takes Part in the 109th Strawberry Festival

The sun was shining, the air was cool, and the sound of fun and laughter filled the air. June 3rd proved to be the perfect day for the 109th Catonsville Strawberry Festival! Each year, hundreds of community members gathered at Hunting Presbyterian Church to enjoy a barbecue, carnival games, sweet treats, face painting, pony rides… and of course, strawberries! This was WIN’s 3rd year volunteering at the beloved festival and without fail; employees and their families spent the afternoon making sure everyone who came out had a great time. The long standing community event marks the beginning of the summer season and we were happy that we could be a part of history for another year in a row. Thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort to making the annual Strawberry Festival a success.

A Month of Advocacy

The month of May signifies two very important events: National Foster Care Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. As advocates for both, WIN Family Services was excited to take part in and to host multiple events that aimed to spread awareness. We kicked off the month with a dinner and fundraiser at Potbelly in Towson. With support from the community, WIN was able to raise funds for our talents and arts development program – DREAM – and their activities. Chipotle  helped us celebrate families even further on Mother’s Day by hosting a fundraising day at its Towson restaurant. Attendees not only were able to enjoy their favorite burritos, but they left knowing they served a good cause. WIN’s biggest fundraiser of the year raised the stakes. The Preakness Stakes that is!  Our Preakness Parking event raised thousands of dollars to benefit the annual holiday event we host for our youth and families. Lastly, the folks at Big Lots at Reisterstown Plaza and Heaven600 AM helped bring our month to a close with a donation drive that collected everything from toiletries to school supplies that we will be distributing to the families we work with throughout the year. All through the month, we launched social media campaigns: #MentalHealthAwareness and #NationalFosterCareMonth where we gave our followers just a closer glimpse into the experiences of those we serve. For more information about mental health and therapeutic foster care, visit our website at www.winfamilyservices.org. A special thank you goes to everyone who supported us during this special month and those who helped facilitate each of the events. We’re all making a difference TOGETHER!

Caps Off to the Grads!

There’s really no feeling in the world quite like the swell of a heart with pride and joy as you watch a youth reach certain milestones. It’s no different for WIN when we see our youth graduate from kindergarten, middle school and even high school! This past June, we watched many of your youth throw their caps in the air. A special congratulations goes to the 11 youth in both our Baltimore and Prince George’s County programs who have graduated high school, our 3 graduates in Baltimore and Prince George’s County from middle school, and our kindergarten graduate in Prince George’s County. WIN Refocuses and Refreshes

May 18th marked one of WIN’s most anticipated events: Staff Retreat! This is the time of the year for WIN  to regroup and refocus as a family so that we can ensure we are providing the best service to our community. Held at The Overhills Mansion in Catonsville, Maryland, staff from Baltimore, Prince George’s County and Cecil County came together to learn, bond, and celebrate. The theme of the day was: live your dream and do what you’re passionate about. Staff were encouraged to visualize their dream  and think about how WIN could help them achieve it. The day was full of fun and laughs as we heard from the CEO, shared in delicious meals, and played games that would give Minute to Win It a run for its money! At the end of the day, staff and their guests gathered for a dinner dance at the mansion, with employees themselves putting on A Night at the Apollo as the evening’s entertainment. Rejuvenated and inspired, WIN moves forward to continue our mission and strengthen individuals, families, and communities all over the world.
